Why piling cleaning matters

Marine growth looks harmless, and that is exactly the problem. It causes serious structural issues slowly enough that owners rarely connect the two until a piling has to be replaced.

• Structural protection. Growth traps moisture against wood, metal, and concrete rather than letting the surface dry out between tides. Trapped moisture drives rot in timber and corrosion in metal fasteners and hardware.

How often should you clean your dock and pilings?

Cleaning frequency depends on water conditions and usage, but most properties benefit from professional cleaning every three to six months.

Where you are matters more than owners expect. Protected bayous and canals with limited tidal flushing hold warm water that grows barnacles steadily year-round. High-flow areas near the passes produce denser, harder growth that bonds more aggressively to the structure. Docks in the back of Tampa Bay tend to collect heavy algae and soft growth, which is what makes a dock slippery before it ever looks dirty.
